When a component listing does not match the datasheet

Relabelled and out-of-spec parts are a real problem in cheap electronics. Which categories it affects, and how to buy around it.

Buying electronic components from a marketplace works well for most things and badly for a specific few. The difference is not price or seller rating — it is whether the part is worth relabelling.

Understanding which category a part falls into tells you when the low price is simply the absence of a distributor’s margin, and when it is a warning.

What relabelling is

A part is manufactured, tested, and graded. Parts that fail the grade for the premium specification are still functional at a lower one. Legitimately, they are sold as the lower grade. Illegitimately, they are marked with the higher part number and sold at the higher price.

There is also straightforward substitution: a listing for a name-brand part ships a generic equivalent with the brand’s marking printed on it.

Both are common enough in cheap electronics that it is worth knowing where the risk concentrates.

Where the risk is high

Branded ICs. Anything with a well-known part number and a meaningful price gap between the genuine article and a generic equivalent. The classic examples are USB-serial bridges, popular op-amps, and microcontrollers. If a listing offers a branded IC at a fraction of distributor price, the arithmetic does not work honestly.

High-capacity memory. Cards and drives whose controllers can be flashed to report a capacity the flash does not have. Writes past the real capacity silently fail. This is the most damaging failure mode in the whole category because it does not show up until data is already lost.

Lithium cells. Capacity is trivially overstated and impossible to check without discharge testing. A cell claiming a capacity well above the best cells any major manufacturer produces is claiming something physically implausible.

Anything with a safety rating. Fuses, mains-rated capacitors, isolation components, opto-isolators. The rating is the entire product, and it is invisible.

Where the risk is low

Passives. Resistors, ceramic capacitors, inductors in ordinary tolerances. There is no premium version to counterfeit — the part costs a fraction of a cent either way. Tolerance may be looser than marked, which matters in precision analogue work and nowhere else.

Connectors and mechanical parts. Headers, terminal blocks, sockets, cable. The failure modes are visible: plating quality, plastic that softens under an iron, contacts with weak retention. You can inspect them on arrival.

Development boards and modules. These are generic products, not branded parts. A sensor breakout is what it is. Where a board carries a branded IC, the IC risk above applies to that component, but the board itself is not a counterfeit of anything.

Tools and consumables. Solder, flux, wire, heat-shrink, hand tools. Quality varies and is directly observable.

Enclosures, heatsinks, hardware. Physical objects with physical specifications you can measure.

Reading a listing

Compare against distributor price. Look the part up at a component distributor. Cheap electronics genuinely undercuts them — no distribution margin, no minimum order — but a factor of ten on a branded IC is not a margin difference.

Prefer a generic part over a suspiciously cheap branded one. A module described by function rather than by brand part number is honest about what it is. A listing claiming a specific branded IC at an implausible price is not.

Buy quantity in the low-risk categories. A hundred resistors, fifty headers, ten metres of wire. The economics are excellent and the risk is negligible.

Test the risky ones on arrival. Memory can be capacity-tested with tools written for exactly this problem. Cells can be discharge-tested. Do it before the dispute window closes, not when you eventually need the part.

What the numbers on this site do and do not tell you

Units sold and buyer rating are useful signals about whether a seller ships what they list, on time, in working order. Thousands of buyers agreeing that a connector set is a connector set is meaningful.

They are much weaker for the categories above, because the failure is invisible at unboxing. A relabelled IC works in most applications. A memory card reports its claimed capacity until you fill it. Feedback on those listings reflects delivery, not authenticity.

The short version

For passives, connectors, modules, tools, and hardware, cheap electronics is simply cheaper with no meaningful catch. For branded ICs, memory, cells, and safety-rated parts, the low price is buying you a risk that no amount of seller feedback measures. Buy freely in the first list; buy carefully and test in the second.
